Match Play

under hills social golf group
  • Where our normal Stroke Competition is played against everyone else, in Match Play you are competing against only one player
  • The scoring system for Match Play reflects how many more holes a player has won compared to their opponent
  • If Player A is off a handicap of 20 and Player B is off 30, then Player B will receive a 10 strokes advantage. This is applied to the 10 most difficult holes on the scorecard as per the index (holes with index 1-10). So both players shoot a 5 on a hole that is ranked no.4, then Player B wins the hole because they wouldv have received a stroke on this hole
  • To mark the scorecards, all that is required is to put a “+” on Player B’s card and a “-” on Player A’s card. If there is no winner on a particular hole, (i.e. the hole is halved) mark both cards with “x”
  • The match is won when a player is leading by a greater number of holes than there are left to play. Here are some examples of the types of scores that might be achieved:
    a. 1-up: This means that the match went to the full 18 holes with the winner finishing with one more hole than the other player
    b. 2 and 1: The first number tells you the number of holes by which the winner is victorious, and the second number tells you how many holes were left to play. So for “2 and 1”, the winner was 2 holes ahead with 1 hole to play. Therefore “4 and 3” means that the winner was 4 holes ahead with 3 holes to play
    c. 2-up: Where a player is 1 hole up with 1 to play, ans the leader won the last hole
    d. 5 and 3: Where a player is 4 holes up and 4 to play, and they won the next hole
  • In the event of a tie at the conclusion of the match, a count back will apply. The player with the most holes won on the 2nd 9 is declared the winner. If a tie still exists, a simple count back from 18 backwards will be declared the winner

Handicap Calculations

handicap differentials

The procedure for calculating a Hills Social Golf Club handicap follows primarily the World Handicap System, except we base your handicap on your best 7 of your last 10 games, considering we only play 10 games a year. We also use the current Slope Rating and Scratch Rating for each course, so that the handicaps used on any given day are adjusted depending on the rating, as per the World Hanidcap System. We use a standard 36 handicap for any new players for their first 3 games until a more realistic handicap is achieved.

The handicaps are determined as follows:

Step 1 – Calculate your Score Differential after each game being: (36 – Stableford Score + Daily Handicap + Par – Scratch Rating) x (113 / Slope Rating) to the nearest tenth
Step 2 – Use the table on the right to determine the number of Score Differentials to be included in the handicap calculation, as well as any Adjustment.
Step 3 – Your Handicap is then the average of Score Differentials being used and subtract any Adjustment (as per Step 2), to the nearest tenth
Step 4 – The Daily Handicap is determined by: ((Handicap x Slope Rating / 113) + (Scratch Rating – Par)) x 0.93, rounded to the nearest whole number.
